ARC’s ground-breaking partnership agreement with Government of Rwanda to advance energy access across the region
Overview
In November 2023, ARC Power signed a landmark Strategic Power Partnership (SPP) with the Government of Rwanda, marking a historic collaboration to develop extension of the National Grid and deploy grid-tied solar generation units across Rwanda.
This partnership represents a significant milestone for both ARC Power and the Government of Rwanda, as they jointly strive to accelerate energy access and transform the energy sector across Africa.
How does it work?
In 2024, ARC Power developed FUSE (Future Utility & Strategic Electrification) in response to the targets set out in the SPP with the Rwanda Government, the national utilities and Rwanda Energy Group.
FUSE combines private-sector efficiency and investment with government collaboration to pre-finance the rapid expansion of affordable energy access through highly scalable hybrid on-grid and off-grid modular systems.
Working in alignment the World Bank’s M300 expansion objective to bring electricity to 300 million people by 2030, FUSE also supports the transition towards decarbonisation of the region, establishing an outline for cost-effective energy solutions that future-proof the National Grid, enhancing resilience through a growing clean energy supply.
What does is deliver?
Under the terms of this agreement, ARC Power will collaborate closely with national utilities and Rwanda Energy Group to identify strategic locations for grid extensions and the installation of grid-tied solar generation units, known as ARCs.
These units will harness the abundant solar energy resources available in the country, leveraging ARC Power’s expertise in renewable energy to pave the way for a brighter, cleaner future, enhancing the country’s clean energy mix.
This ground-breaking collaboration reflects the shared vision of ARC Power and the Government of Rwanda to address the pressing energy challenges facing the continent.
By promoting renewable energy adoption and expanding access to electricity, the partnership also seeks to accelerate sustainable development, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and foster economic prosperity for all Rwandans.
“We are thrilled to join forces with the Government of Rwanda in this unprecedented endeavour. This partnership demonstrates our shared commitment to driving positive change and promoting sustainable energy solutions. Together, we aim to set a new standard for the energy sector in Africa and serve as a model for other nations to follow.”
